Stop sending people away!

websites Jun 15, 2023

Don’t send people away from your website!

I see it happen all the time...

As soon as someone gets a visitor on their site, they say something like, "Hey, I'm glad you're here! Go find me on social media."

What?!

Let's make it applicable

Suppose Beth and I went on that usually-high-pressure first day (it was so easy with her!), sat down to share a meal, and then I suggested— just as the appetizers hit the table: “Hey, why don’t you leave here and go to my old high school. There’s a picture of me on the wall, holding a trophy, from the time we won the state wrestling championship.”

Or— “Here’s my Dad’s mobile number. Give him a call and ask him about the time we hiked the Grand Canyon and really struggled because it was 100+ degrees outside and we didn’t take any water.”

Or— “You would really like my sister. Here’s her address. Why don’t we take a rain check on the rest of this meal so you can go spend some time with her?”

I know. Those examples seem nonsensical. If I did any of that, we probably wouldn’t be married today.

Strange, I know, but...

But think about most of the websites and emails you’ve seen lately. If you have a website, evaluate your own.

Do you send people away— to other places— just as soon as you’ve (finally) capture their attention?

If that’s been your approach, no worries. We can change it. You’re doing what most people do. In fact, you’re doing what most of us have been taught to do.

You’re telling visitors, “Go away!”

Another analogy

Again, it’s odd. To use a different analogy, it’s much like inviting people to a dinner party, prepping to serve the meal, and then sending them down the street to eat… at the neighbor’s.

“Learn about me over there,” you call, graciously ushering them across your yard, “instead of interacting with me while you’re here.” Then— “I really do want to serve you and hope we can work together long-term.”

Look at the graphic that follows.

Rather than posturing our site in the traditional way (and sending visitors somewhere else), we want to make them feel comfortable staying. In fact, we want to go a few steps further.

📣  We want to use those places to which we usually send them (social media) as tools to redirect them back to us.

📣  We want to consistently add valuable  content to our site, using email and other means of communication to offer them reasons to keep coming back.
