People need to see progress
Aug 07, 2023You need a framework. Regardless of the industry you’re in, you “sell” a transformation. You take people from where they are to where they want— and are designed— to be.
The result, the location you’re taking them, matters.
But, if’s often TOO MUCH to point to the finish line alone. People need progress markers, checkpoints, milestones along the way.
What’s in the framework?
Your framework should include all three of the following:
๐ A destination = the preferred location to which you’re leading your client
๐งญ Steps = specific actions required to get there (with the promise that if they take those steps they will arrive)
โ Milestones = objective (not subjective) markers along the way, which highlight progress along your path
This is true whether you work in a church, serve as a financial planner, train people to lose weight or get stronger, do life insurance...
It works in every industry.
People need to know--
๐ Where you're taking them
๐งญ The path, the steps it takes to get there
โ They need to see progress along the way (which verifies that the plan is working AND provides them moments to pause and celebrate achievement)
When you articulate a clear designation, outline a path that takes people there, help them overcome the problems / obstacles that inevitably arise, and show them milestones that highlight their progress, you accelerate their results and amplify your income.
Let’s get practical— what it looks like—
Here are a few examples of coaching “paths” or “frameworks” I know about.
Here’s the first example…
My friend Shawn, who hired me for a season to enhance the digital presence of his coaching organization, teaches his three “Gears of Growth” framework. He says that every organization has three primary gears— culture, systems, and the team.
Here’s how it works. Any cog— or gear— in your car’s engine can keep the entire vehicle at a standstill. Or cause it to move slower.
When the gears don’t connect together and move properly, you’ve got a problem. Namely, the car won’t move any faster than the SLOWEST cog in the engine turns.
When the gears all work in alignment and move in sync, the results are fabulous. The vehicle moves forward and you make progress. You move from where you are to where you want to be.
In the same way, those three gears in your organization…
โ๏ธ Culture = the PLACE you work
โ๏ธ Team = the PEOPLE you work with
โ๏ธ Systems = the PROCESSES you use to get things done
… must all “work.” Any of them can stall or slow forward momentum.
Shawn often says, “No organizational leader ever says that their strengths finally caught up with them. Rather, it’s the weak points that bring us down.” By addressing the weakest gear you can begin moving forward with less friction.
Here’s the second example…
My friends Dave and Troy, the “Oola Guys,” talk about 7 key areas of life: fitness, finance, family, field (your career, or whatever you do full time), faith, friends, and fun. Each of these areas, they say, are like the spokes on a wheel.
“When every spoke is in alignment,” they say, “the wheel easily rolls forward.”
I know, you’re probably visualizing a bike right now…
“If one of the spokes is warped, short, or breaks, your wheel gets a little wobbly,” they observe, “but it can still roll.”
Of course, lose two spokes and the wheel stops rolling altogether. That is, you stop making progress in another area, because of what occurs somewhere else in a (seemingly) unrelated area.
“Every part of life matters,” they teach, “so you want balance and growth in each of these seven key areas.”
The guys use the word Oola as a nod to the French word oolala, which means everything is “perfect.” That is, life exists at the sweet spot.
You might have experienced a moment of such oola before— that state of awesomeness in which everything “just works.” And, you’ve likely lived through moments of un-oola, too— those tough seasons where one area disintegrates and its dysfunction spreads to every other area.
โ Family isn't working, so your field (work) suffers.
โ Field struggles, causing financial chaos.
โ Finances get jacked, so life isn't very fun.
โ Fun-threshold drops, so your friend-quotient goes low.
โ Faith tanks because of the struggles, so you feel hopeless in all the other areas as well.
You get the idea. These areas all matter. Moreover, they emphatically do connect far more than we realize. So, the Oola Guys help people find balance and growth in each area.
Let’s talk about you
We try to “map” the framework for each of the people we serve at Amplify.
So, we’ve created a path— a clear destination with milestones and checkpoints— for nonprofit leaders.
And for business leaders.
And writers, coaches, and content creators.
And online marketers.
In fact, if you go to the home page and click the “start here” button, it will lead you down a path where you tell us “which of these best describes you” and then see the framework— checkpoints included— most relevant to you.
